Love, land, marriage, interests. Which of these is more important? The happiness of the young generation, or – in accordance with centuries-old peasant customs – the unification of their lands that would ultimately ensure the livelihood of the new family? Love? Can the future be built on fleeting happiness? Is the law of the society, common sense and “land to land” stronger than two people’s mutual attraction? The 1955 movie Merry-Go-Round, based on a novella by Imre Sarkadi is a Hungarian classic. Directed by Zoltan Fabri, the movie was nominated for the Golden Palm at the 1956 Cannes Film Festival. Its tow protagonists, Mari Torőcsik and the tragically departed Imre Soos were among the era’s brightest stars. On the whirling merry-go-round at a fair Imre Soos shouts to Mari Torőcsik: “We are flying, Mari!” These words are the eternal expression of the intoxicating joy of love and freedom. Of the story’s two threads – the social and the personal – director Attila Vidnyanszky is more concerned with the personal one. The power and might of love and the future promise of an accomplished love... Vidnyanszky illustrates the overwhelming force of feelings through majestic scenic composition. In addition to the eminent cast, the dynamism of the production is ensured by the National Dance Ensemble... Merry-Go-Round is a theatrical production surpassing genres, combining prose, dance and music into a poetic vision on stage.
